Day 84 "Pitiful"

Trip to the vet clinic this morning.

Conehead to be worn. Poor Tommy.
120 antibiotics to administer over the next 30 days. Poor me.

Day 83 "Handsome"

Tom, our handsome "Collie Wally"

Day 80 "Crowned"

April 20, 2011

Crown mouldings went up finally and just need to be filled and painted.

Day 79 "Fan Club"

April 18, 2011

Function won over form this time.

The ceiling fan was added today. I think it's just the right size to not become the center of focus, while still providing the breeze we need during the hot months. A speed control wall switch will allow infinite speed adjustment so we won't blow the gas burners out while cooking!

Day 78 "Bottoms Up"

Pendants over the table, dimmed.

I've gotten so many compliments on these!

Day 77 "Artichokes"

Palm Sunday

Two down, three to go!

Day 76 "New Day, New Door"

Remember the old door with the jalousie window?

The new door was installed on Friday evening. Quite a nice transformation, I think!

April 15, 2011

We bought this entry door for the barn almost 9 years ago and then never used it. It has been standing guard in the garage ever since. I remembered that it opened inwards to the right, which is just what we needed for this door replacement. On a whim, we measured it and found it to be the prefect size. It was a nice blessing, like getting a *free* door amidst all the other expenses. We still need door mouldings and baseboards and I have no idea what color to paint them or if we should stain them like the maple/cherry. And now I kind of regret painting the dark stained window mouldings. I need a designer to tell me what to do (but please, not white woodwork, a cleaning nightmare)!

Day 75 "Too Big To Hide"

April 13, 2011

In my never-ending quest to capture the beauty of the copper in the Black Galaxy, here are two more tries. This looks very typical, except the flecks are a very deep hue of copper, not much lighter than the black.

This is the best pic so far, but the copper flecks are still darker in hue. I had to post-process to get this, hence the red spot I forgot to crop out. That is not typical of the look!

Only one thing of note happened in the new kitchen today and I didn't even think to photograph it. I cooked the first meal! But I did notice this lone clematis growing up through my azalea and thought it was unusual and attractive. A vine of them grew in this spot for a few years when we first moved here, but I haven't seen a flower for about 10 years. And I remember them being very dark pinky-purple. Very interesting.

Day 74 "Let There Be Light!"

April 12, 2011

This was the 18th day of the remodel, and I am now moved back completely into the kitchen. The makeshift kitchen in the living room has been disbanded and everything has returned to (dusty) normal. I'll miss that little kitchen. It was convenient while watching tv to just walk about 4 steps to fix something to eat!

In this pic, I believe all lights were set to low-ish.
Just the pendants are on here. The ones over the table are on full power but are on a dimmer that goes down to less than candlelight. Loff them! Here, I have added the can lights on high. They're also on a dimmer, which I love. In this pic, I have added the undercabinet lights on high. They have 2 settings and off, and are controlled by one switch, but can be used separately. They make the copper in the granite sparkle, and I'm all about the glam! Painting is finished and the fan is back in place. The new crown mouldings will be added later this week. We also still need baseboards in the kitchen and the shoe moulding around the cabinet bases. The new door in the kitchen will be hung on Friday.

It's coming together! I hope to have the curtains up by this weekend. The windows look so huge and harsh w/o them. The fan for the center of the kitchen has been ordered too. I don't want to *see* a fan in the center of the kitchen but there is no doubt we need one in hot weather.

Day 73 "Bright"

April 11, 2011

We've never hired anyone to paint for us before today. I felt as pampered as if I were relaxing at a spa! I highly recommend it!

The electricians will finish up on Tuedasy (or else!) and then I can really hustle and get the house back to normal before the oldsters arrive at the end of the week. The impromptu light fixtures are not growing on me.

4/11/11

Day 72 "Lovely Water!"

April 10, 2011

The plumber bailed on us on Saturday but finally came out on Sunday. It's so nice to have water again!

We've always wanted water and ice in the door!

The painter will be here in a few hours to paint the hall & foyer ceilings and walls and repaint the kitchen ceiling, which I reeeally am not loving.. What a luxury it is to hire someone to paint! I did waaay too much at the beginning if the week. There's a bunch of electrical stuff to finish on Tuesday, and hopefully the drywallers will come later this week and hang our new door and the crown mouldings in the hall and foyer.

4/10/11

Day 71 "Not a Stand-up Guy"

April 9, 2011
Since our plumber stood us up, there was no work accomplished in the kitchen excpet by me, unpacking. I'm almost finished, but the pantry is giving me fits. I like things really organized and am not finding this task easy.

Amerock Lattice pull.

Amerock Lattice knob. Both of the above are in a Roman Bronze finish on zinc.

The plumber is coming on Sunday morning and is not charging extra.

4/9/11

Day 70 "Coming together"

April 8, 2011

The granite arrived first thing and looks gorgeous!

The stove and refrigerator are functional, but there's no water for ice yet. That will be finished on Saturday along with plumbing to the sink and dishwasher.

I keep forgetting to mention that we have a new back door awaiting installation.

The granite is Black Galaxy. Each of those bright specks is real copper embedded in the rock. I can't seem to show the reflectivity and richness of the color.

This is the pendant light above the sink. It's made with canning jars!

4/7/11

Day 69 "Moving In""

This cabinet was really easy to do because it's exactly the same size as the old one and the dishwasher isn't moving. I need to look for some type of mug hanger that doesn't need to be screwed into the shelf.
I need to look around for pretty things to display in this lattice cabinet. Hub thinks we should get pics of pretty things and mount them behind the lattice. Men!! I think I need to buy pretty things. This entire side of the kitchen incl. pantry is completely different from before. It's going to be a challenge. At least now the spices will be right beside the stove instead of across the kitchen.

April 7, 2011

Today was only the second day in 13 that there was no work done on the kitchen remodel. I have actually begun moving back in, and that should count as work since it shows up in photos. And hub modified one of the pendant lights so it could be used over the sink. That was a very big deal to me.
