Day 40 "Dinner On The Hoof"

What a suprise it was to see this flock of wild turkeys in our pasture this morning! We know at least 30 live or frequent our *lower 40* but this is the first time this year we've seen them up here.

In all the years I've seen wild turleys out in fields, I have never before today seen a tom all ruffled up like this guy. He was so huge and impressive! And he spent a lot more time displaying for his hens (?) than he did eating. It made me wonder if this is mating season of if he thought he was protecting them.

I have two big orange traffic cones in the pasture, and another picture suggested that he was displaying for the cones. So, was he protecting them from the evil orange plastic cone or was he trying to entice it to join his flock?

I keep the camera ready and close-by for times such as these. This hen looked up and checked me out when I opened the window to take the shot. She didn't seem too concerned though, and quickly went back to foraging in the dirt.
